Fremont, San Luis Obispo - Ben Lowes

This image was taken on Kodak Portra 400 in San Luis Obispo, California, outside the historic Fremont Theatre. I think shooting on Portra 400 really brought out the warmth and nostalgic quality of the scene, and helped achieve the look and feel that I aim for in my images. I personally feel that if I had shot this photo with a digital camera, it wouldn’t retain the same texture and emotion that 35mm film gives you. 

The scene captured couldn’t have been planned for, as I was originally just framing up a shot of the theatre. The Chevy Corvette came rumbling down the street and I knew I had to re-compose to try and capture the car as it passed in front of the theatre. I managed to get into position and capture the Chevy slightly out of focus and with a little bit of motion blur using a slower shutter speed.

I love how this image captures a fleeting moment. There’s a sense of movement and timelessness that transports me back every time I look at it. 

I have no idea what a Shrek Rave is, but I hope they had fun.
